What does the cross-stitch calculator do?

The calculator answers the two questions every stitcher asks before starting a chart: how big will the finished design be, and how much fabric do I need to cut? Enter the fabric count (stitches per inch) and your pattern's width and height in stitches, and it converts them into real-world measurements in both inches and centimeters.

It works for Aida in any count (11, 14, 16, 18 and more) as well as evenweave and linen stitched over two threads. A margin setting adds seam and framing allowance around the design, so the fabric-to-cut number is the one you can actually take to the cutting mat.

What is fabric count?+

Fabric count is the number of stitches that fit in one inch of fabric. Aida 14 means 14 stitches per inch. The higher the count, the smaller (and finer) the finished design.

How does stitching over 2 threads change the size?+

On evenweave and linen you usually stitch over 2 fabric threads, so each cross covers twice the space. A 28-count linen stitched over 2 gives the same design size as 14-count Aida.

How much extra fabric should I add around the design?+

A margin of 3 inches (about 7.5 cm) on each side is the common recommendation — enough for hooping while you stitch and for stretching or framing afterwards.

Where do I find my pattern's size in stitches?+

Almost every chart states its size as width × height in stitches, usually near the title or the color key. If you made the pattern with our Cross-Stitch Pattern Maker, the size is shown right above the chart.

Can it calculate how much thread I need?+
