Embroidery Floss Calculator

This embroidery floss calculator works out how many skeins of floss a color needs — from your fabric count, number of strands, and stitch count.

Fabric

Aida 14 is the most common. For linen or evenweave stitched over 2, use the effective count (e.g. 28-count over 2 = 14).

Thread

Full cross-stitches are usually worked with 2 strands on 14–18 count.

Stitches

Every chart legend lists the stitch count per color. Repeat the calculation for each color in your palette.

You will need

Skeins of floss
1.1 · buy 2
Based on a standard 8.7 yd (8 m) six-strand skein, incl. ~20% waste.
Working thread length
24.6 m · 27 yd
≈ 1936 stitches per skein at these settings

Tip: dye lots vary — buy all skeins of a color at once, and add one spare skein for large background areas.

What does the embroidery floss calculator do?

Before you order thread for a project, you need to know how many skeins each color takes. This calculator estimates floss usage from the three numbers that drive it: the fabric count (stitches per inch), how many strands you stitch with, and how many full cross-stitches the color has in your chart.

The estimate is based on a standard six-strand skein of 8.7 yards (8 meters), such as DMC or Anchor stranded cotton, and includes a realistic allowance for starting, ending, and waste. Run it once per color in your legend and you have a complete shopping list.

How it works

  1. 01

    Pick fabric and strands

Choose your Aida count (or effective count for evenweave over 2) and how many strands you thread the needle with.

  2. 02

    Enter the stitch count

Type the number of full stitches for one color — every chart legend lists this next to the floss number.

  3. 03

    Read off the skeins

You instantly see the skeins needed, the recommended number to buy, and the total thread length in meters and yards.

Frequently asked questions

Is the embroidery floss calculator free?+

Yes — completely free, no account, no limits. Like every tool on PatternNook, it runs entirely in your browser.

How many stitches does one skein of floss cover?+

On 14-count Aida with 2 strands, one standard 8.7 yd skein covers roughly 1,700–1,900 full cross-stitches. Higher counts use less thread per stitch, more strands use proportionally more.

What skein size does the calculator assume?+

A standard six-strand skein of 8.7 yards (8 meters) — the size DMC, Anchor, and most brands sell. If your brand differs, scale the result by skein length.

Does the estimate include waste?+

Yes — about 20% is added for starting, ending, carrying thread, and the odd tangle. Careful stitchers use less; dense confetti areas can use more.

How do I handle half stitches and backstitch?+

Half and quarter stitches use roughly half the thread of a full cross — count two of them as one full stitch. Backstitch is minor for most charts; add a small margin for heavy outlining.

Where do I find the stitch count per color?+

Every published chart lists it in the color legend. If you build a pattern with our Cross-Stitch Pattern Maker, the legend shows the exact stitch count for every floss color automatically.
