What does the knitting gauge calculator do?

Gauge — how many stitches and rows fit in 10 cm or 4 inches — decides whether your finished piece matches the pattern's measurements. This calculator turns a quick swatch measurement into your exact gauge: count stitches and rows over any width and height, and it normalizes them to the standard 10 cm / 4 in figures.

It then works the other way too: enter a target width and height and it converts them into the number of stitches to cast on and rows to work at your gauge. It works the same for knitting and crochet — just count stitches and rows (or rounds) the way your craft defines them.

Why does gauge matter so much?+

A difference of one stitch per 10 cm on a 50 cm sweater body is 5 stitches — easily a full size. Matching the pattern's gauge is the only way the finished measurements come out right.

How big should my swatch be?+

At least 12–15 cm (5–6 in) square, so you can measure the middle 10 cm away from the distorted edges. Always wash and block it the way you will treat the finished piece.

What if my gauge doesn't match the pattern?+

Too many stitches per 10 cm: switch to larger needles or hook. Too few: go smaller. Change by half or whole sizes and swatch again until the stitch gauge matches.

Does it work for crochet?+

Yes — the math is identical. Count stitches across and rows (or rounds) vertically over a measured area, and the calculator does the rest.
