How a photo becomes a diamond painting canvas

When you upload a photo, the converter resamples it to your chosen drill width: set 70 drills wide and the image becomes a grid 70 cells across, with every cell destined to hold one resin diamond on the canvas. The math that turns that into a physical size is the drills-per-inch step. Standard square drills are 2.5 mm across, which works out to roughly 10 drills per inch (4 per centimeter). So a 70-drill-wide chart lands at about 7 in (18 cm) wide, and a 120-drill chart at about 12 in (30 cm).

That relationship is worth memorizing because it ties directly to the pre-cut canvases you can actually buy. A 30x40 cm canvas holds about 120x160 drills; a 40x50 cm canvas needs roughly 160x200. Square drills or round drills

This is the one decision that changes how the finished piece looks and how the placing feels, so it's worth being honest about the trade-offs rather than picking by habit.

Square drills sit edge to edge with no gaps, so a completed section reads as a solid, crisp mosaic — the sharp corners catch light in neat rows and the whole surface looks tiled. They also snap into place with a satisfying click when you line them up against their neighbors, which many people find addictive. The downside is that they're less forgiving: a drill set slightly crooked leaves a visible dark seam, so you're constantly straightening as you go.

Round drills are faster and far more forgiving. Because circles never tile perfectly, there's always a tiny diamond of canvas showing between them, so small placement errors disappear into that gap and you can lay them down quickly without fussing over alignment. The finished sparkle is a little softer and less coverage-complete. As a rule, reach for square drills on geometric art, lettering, and anything you want to look sharp up close; reach for round on large backgrounds, kids' projects, and any time speed matters more than a flawless grid. Why fewer colors usually looks better

Diamond painting is viewed differently from most crafts: the resin drills sparkle and your eye blends adjacent colors from a normal viewing distance of a few feet. That optical mixing does a lot of work for you, which means a chart with 20 well-chosen colors often reads richer than the same photo pushed to 40. Extra colors mostly buy you confetti — scattered single drills of a shade that appears only a handful of times across the whole canvas.

Confetti is the real enemy of an enjoyable project. Every isolated drill means hunting through your color bags, peeling one diamond, placing it, and switching again — for a single cell that nobody will notice from the couch. Portraits generally need 25–30 colors to keep skin gradients smooth, animals and florals sit comfortably at 20–25, and bold graphic images can drop to 12–15. A good workflow is to generate at 25 colors, then step down and stop the moment skin or sky starts to visibly band. The legend's coverage counts make the offenders obvious: any color placing fewer than a few dozen drills is a candidate to merge away.

Self-kitting: sourcing drills by DMC number

Diamond painting drills are sold by DMC code — the same numbering system used for embroidery floss — so the legend on your chart doubles as a shopping list. Sellers on AliExpress, Etsy, and dedicated drill shops label their bags by DMC number (DMC 310 black, DMC 3799 charcoal, and so on), which means you can assemble a custom kit yourself instead of buying a pre-made one. If you've ever converted the same photo with the cross stitch converter, those DMC codes carry straight across, and any drills you have left from one project are labeled to be reusable in the next.

To estimate quantities, use the rule that 1 gram is roughly 180–200 drills. The legend’s per-color drill counts tell you how many cells each color fills, so divide by about 190 to get the grams to order, then round up and add a cushion — 20% is sensible, because drills get lost in the carpet, and a scoop of extras lets you replace duds without reordering. Most sellers bag in 10 g or 50 g lots, so a color needing 400 drills is comfortably one small bag with plenty to spare. Order a hair more of your dominant background color than the math suggests; running out of the shade that fills half the canvas is the classic self-kitting mistake.

Printing, prepping, and sealing

Getting a usable chart on paper

Download the chart as a PNG and print it at a size where the cells stay legible, counting in tens as you go so you don’t lose your place mid-row. Print in color if you can — matching a printed cell to a drill by hue is much faster than working from memory. For large canvases, keep the on-screen legend with its symbols and drill counts beside you rather than flipping back and forth. A cheap magnifier or a magnifying lamp pays for itself fast on charts finer than about 100 drills wide, where the printed symbols get small.

If your photo has a distracting background, run it through the background remover before converting. Transparent areas simply drop out of the chart, so none of your color budget or your drill order gets spent on a background you didn't want — and the subject picks up the detail those colors would have wasted.

Placing and finishing cleanly

Work in small blocks, peel back only a few inches of the protective film at a time, and press the whole canvas flat under books for a day first if it arrived rolled — a flat, tacky surface is what makes drills stay put. When the last diamond is down, lay a clean sheet of paper over the canvas and run a rolling pin over it firmly to bed every drill into the adhesive.

Sealing is optional and a matter of taste. A brush-on sealer locks drills permanently and adds gloss but can dull the sparkle slightly and yellow over years; leaving it unsealed keeps maximum shine but risks a drill popping loose if the piece is handled. Many people skip sealer entirely and simply frame the finished canvas under glass with a spacer so nothing presses on the drills. Whichever you choose, keep a few spare drills of each color taped to the back of the frame — the one thing you'll wish you had is the exact DMC shade, a year later, when a single diamond finally works loose.
